A Method for the Design of Optimal Switching Surfaces for Autonomous Hybrid Systems

This paper discusses the design of optimal feedback control laws for hybrid systems with autonomous (continuous) modes. The solution of similar problems, when the dynamic modes are non linear, is, in general, dependent on the initial conditions. The same problem affects the ”open loop” control based on the definition of the optimal switching times. In this work an algorithm is proposed, allowing to build switching surfaces which are optimal for any possible initial condition. It is based on the sensitivity analysis of the optimal switching times with respect to the initial conditions and on the identification of the set of initial conditions maximizing the information relevant to the design of the surface.
